Hello Bocce Lovers Everywhere!

Yikes! This is the start of the twelfth year of this weekly ezine. It gets tougher each year. I hope more readers will send photos and comments and questions. That helps a lot!

We're still on hold with our new Sons of Italy facility. We're working on an occupancy permit and we hope to get things going in a couple of weeks. We still need some fencing around the courts and a few minor touch-ups, but we are very excited about the place. We're hoping for a February start date.

If you'd like to join a league or host a party or team building event etc., send us an email: .

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Here's a pleasant email from old friend Lew Scialdone who wants to visit our new polyurethane courts. Hope to get many more such emails...

"Hello from Saratoga Springs, New York. Iíve been receiving your newsletter for some time now, and have been meaning to get in touch with you to let you know that weíve got a pretty solid core of bocce enthusiasts here in New Yorkís capital district area: Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Amsterdam. Weíre excited to hear about your new courts, and weíre wondering if we could work out a time when a bunch of us, maybe a carload or two, could visit your courts and have a few friendly games with a bunch of you and your guys. Just for fun, for camaraderie, and for meeting other bocce enthusiasts. Of course, it would also be good practice for getting used to the new surface. My partner and I played on the synthetic courts only once, up in Toronto. We loved Ďem and dream about being able to have a few here. It doesnít look like thatís going to happen any time soon, though. In any case, let me know if youíd be interested in having us come down for a little friendly competition.

Ya know, Mario, I think I met you many years ago. Whether I did or not, I know that my uncle, John Scialdone, met you: heís on the cover of the first edition of your book! Heís living in south central Vermont now, and doesnít play as much bocce as he used to, but, his being a Red Sox fan, I donít think it would be too hard to get him to travel deeper into Red Sox territory to play a couple games of bocce.

Thatís enough rambling on from me. Iím going to sign off here, with hopes that we can get together sometime soon for some friendly bocce.

Ciao for now."

{Come on down - once we get our occupancy permit we'll try and set up a time when you could visit. It will be great fun! Others who want to take a trip - send us an email.}

Greetings Mario!

My apologies if this question has been thoroughly addressed previously. We in Chattanooga are faced with having to choose an artificial surface this year for our new four-court indoor club. The building is too air-tight for a clay surface that would have to be wet down. The poured material is too expensive.

I know that there is considerable experience with carpeting and possibly other surfaces around the country. However, are any of your readers familiar with any significant research or testing that has gone in to finding a material or layers of material that can be rolled on to a concrete slab, which has the best achievable bocce characteristics: high speed, lack of drift, lack of bounce, no damage caused to the underlying slab by regular raffa play (have I missed anything!).

Chattanooga is less that one hour from Dalton, GA ("The Carpet Capitol of the World"). Perhaps what we need is there, or perhaps we need to interest an engineer there in doing some research (if it hasn't already been done).

Your friend, Dr. Frank Knight, Chattanooga Bocce Club,

{Hello Frank and thanks for the email. Many players, especially older seniors members, are moving to carpeted courts so that there is somewhat less maintenance. I hope someone will respond with a good suggestion for your group. Did you see Dr. Cordano's recent email (December 2012 Issue 36) about carpeted courts?}
