Hello again faithful bocce fans,

We've been very busy lately running two local charity events and a corporate outing in Miami Beach, Florida - all in the span of 4 days. We had two successful events for Special Olympics and Horizons for Homeless Children, the second raising $35,000 with bocce. The Martignetti Family has run this October event for 8 straight years and we have been there to help every time!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Eighth Annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament raised $35,000 for Horizons for Homeless Children. Our bocce crew helped out with the officiating with Jim Tsouprakakis, Al Falco, Linda Fay, and Joe Scuderi sporting the referee shirts.

Jim Brossman sends news...

"I live in Reamstown, PA and have been running a Bocce Tournament for 15 years. We play on grass and I paint the lines to make a 20’ x 60’ court. We always have 3 courts and I try to get 32 players. Everyone receives a cap and we have brunch and a Chicken Bar-B-Que at noon. I always have unique names for the 3 the Good, Bad and Ugly, Moe, Larry, Curly, Homer, Bart, Marge.

Last year was real hot, so I named them...Hazy, Hot and Humid. I start the tournament at 8:00am with the national anthem followed by drawing names for your partner. At the end of the day trophies are given out along with champagne for the top 4 places.

I’m an active member on our local recreation board and I hope someday to have Bocce Courts installed in the community. I always enjoy reading your articles…keep up the great work

See attached for this year’s winners of the 15th Annual Brossman Bocce Tournament "

1st place Jim & Dylan Brossman

2nd place Dave Kupp & Ed Connor

3rd place Matt Weaver & Brad Wolf

4th place Butch Ebbert & Ron Harven

The Sons of Italy Lodge #902 is offering one more outdoor tournament for charity. See Tourney section below. The date is October 20th benefiting the American Cancer Society. This will be the last event for the SOI until our new facility is up and running.

Awesome Glo Bocce Light Up Balls - 107 mm

{This set weighs almost 12 lbs. So these are NOT cheap light weight balls. They can be crashed together hard without fear of breaking a ball or the electronics.}

Pallino D'Oro October 27 & 28 at the Ciociaro Club.

This from Michael Grasser...

Larry Bennett asks...

I'm playing around again with laser measuring....we know we can't reliably bounce lasers off round surfaces so I made a metal l shaped bracket to bounce the beam off. Have you toyed with thus? What laser do you use? and how are you targeting the balls, etc, etc."

Thanx much, Larry Bennett ** Treasurer Cape Coral Bocce Assoc. Cape Coral, Florida

{Sounds like a great idea. Has any reader experimented with this kind of laser measuring? Let us know. }

Patrick Laffey to the rescue..

"In response to Larry Bennett regarding laser distance measuring:

I use a Milwaukee laser distance meter model 2280-20. It Is very pricy at $199.00 but it is accurate to within 1/16” at 200 feet (mainly used for construction projects). Here is a link:

The surface of the ball may be round but that has very little, if any, effect on the measurement from the laser.

It is extremely accurate in measuring the distance from the pallino to the ball. I place the back of the device against the pallino and aim the laser at the center of the target ball to be measured. It is very effective (because you pick the same point on each ball) but you have to be very careful when placing the meter against the pallino so that you don’t bump it.

I have used this in league but many of the “seasoned” players do not buy into it providing accurate measurements. There have been many times when people wanted to re-measure after me because they didn’t trust the readings but they came to find that the measurements provided from the laser were exact. I have used it to measure balls from 8 inches to 12 feet away and it was spot on EVERY time.

I hope that this helps!"

{Wow! This sounds great, Patrick. Have any others used such a device? Please REPLY.}

This news from the USBF's Gayle Morris...

"I have attached a letter that I would appreciate everyone taking a few minutes to read. Frank Rivera and I are trying to drum up interest in publishing a National Newsletter for the USBF and its members.

I hope that we will get overwhelming response for help, or at least be given some direction as to who else we could possibly contact to help us gather information for the newsletter.

Thank you for your cooperation.

October 1, 2012

I am writing this letter to all of you regarding interest in a National Newsletter for the USBF. I have been speaking with Danny as well as member Frank Rivera from the Western Sector regarding possibly working towards this newsletter goal. For quite a while now, Danny and other board members have been trying to put together a newsletter that would be available to all of the USBF members in good standing. Frank currently prepares a newsletter for the Western Sector and I currently prepare a newsletter for the Italia-America Bocce Club in the Midwest. By the fact that Frank and I are currently preparing one for our individual areas, Danny asked if Frank would be willing to put together a national newsletter and I would be willing to help with anything Frank may need for this task. Frank and I agreed that we would be willing to work together in preparing this new national newsletter.

Here’s what the issue seems to be in order to prepare and publish this newsletter. We seem to be lacking the ability to get a member or members from the Eastern Sector and the majority of the Midwest Sector to submit any articles, pictures, or information regarding tournaments, etc. I point out these two sectors, because it’s clear by Frank’s Western newsletter that there seems to be plenty of members who are willing to submit information from the Western Sector and therefore allow Frank to publish quite an extensive newsletter. I am placing blame on neither Guy DeSantis, the Eastern Sector President, nor Robert Della Croce the Midwest Sector President. I know that they have tried extensively to extrapolate information from the club presidents of their respective sectors to no avail.

There are members of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors that feel that a national newsletter would be an asset to the USBF members. In particular, Danny has been trying for years to have this come to fruition for the betterment of the USBF. We are striving to put a newsletter out four times a year; Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

I am sending this letter to all of you specifically, because Danny said that you have been helpful to him when he has reached out in the past. I am asking all of you to please check with your club presidents and other members that can help make this national newsletter a reality for the USBF members.

I would appreciate a response regarding any issues that Frank and I can help you with and your thoughts on how to accomplish this newsletter goal. Please feel free to send anything you feel is of interest to either Frank or I AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I will keep you posted as to how it’s coming…. "

Frank Rivera

{Sounds like a great idea. Can anyone help? REPLY to Gayle or Frank.}
