Hello again faithful bocce subscribers,

We've finally squared away things for the April Providence tourney and you can click a link below under Bocce News for a pdf file with the details.

Now we need to set about the task of getting teams to come to Providence and enjoy a great tourney and an equally great city. Please help us spread the word.

I'll be in the Pacific Northwest for the 10th Annual Bellingham Bay Tournament in April (4/21/12) and then I'll head back East for our money tourney which will be the following week in Providence, RI (4/28 & 29). I hope to see many of you in one part of the USA or the other. I look forward to meeting you as well as the Boccemon, Tom McNutt, who works so hard to promote our game.

My best to all for 2012!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

We've finally got the details set for the Providence Money Tourney. Click below for a pdf with details. There has been a change. The total guaranteed payout will be $8000 and the top prize will be $4000 (not too shabby). The Dunkin Donuts Center has put up the prize money and, in addition, must finance building courts and the carpet to lay them over. So, I guess we can understand their thinking. If this tourney goes well, we think it can grow into a great annual spring event. If you've never been to Providence, this would be a great time to experience it!

The Providence Tourney is set for April 28 & 29, 2012. This will be for four-player teams which can be made up of male, female, or co-ed teams. For our first year, we want to keep things as simple as possible. Next year - who knows?

We'll follow the format of the other large money tourneys like The World Series of Bocce and others who play four players who roll one ball each and play both ends of the court.

The prize money works out this way.

1st Place = $4000
2nd Place = $2000
3rd Place = $1000
4th Place = $500
5th Place = $250
6th Place = $250

For locals and those within driving distance, the entry fee is $200 per team or $50 per person. Kayla Beauvais is the Dunkin Donuts Event Coordinator and she has done a great job of securing reasonable hotel rates for those traveling. She can be reached at 401-331-0700 ext 7126 or (or see pdf).

On Friday, April 27th there will be a charity tournament for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence. Contact Kayla if you want to participate (and get a "leg up" on the competition). However, that event will run from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a dinner for the participants. I think that, if you came in on Friday we could probably arrange for you to play on the courts from say, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM or so. More details to follow.

There will be shuttles to a nearby casino throughout the day and we will get that info and more to you ASAP.

That's it for now. Please help us get the word out. I can't recall any $4000 top prize bocce events happening in New England. Hopefully this will grow and become extremely popular. Please email the pdf to anyone on your list who might want to play. Many thanks for your help.

Jean-Yves BOULAY introduces the New Petanque.

{It's a great idea for sports like bocce, petanque, boules, lawn bowls, and curling to band together to support each other. It creates greater numbers for all of us as we try to promote, attract sponsors, and market our sport.}

The concept is simply that: each player plays with 3 boules (bowls) of three different values. These three boules are worth 1, 2 and 3 points and the choice to launch the boule is free at all times ....

The rest of the rules of the game remains almost identical to the traditional Petanque game. However, this new concept changes spectacularly the strategy in the game. This makes this new version of Petanque game more attractive and more fascinating: at each run launch the choice of the played boule, but also those to be drawn, will greatly influence the course of the game! This ability to choose, for each run, the value of the boule and what happens then to the ground boules will also introduce a strong atmosphere of suspense throughout the round. This outstanding suspense will be felt so by both teams either the audience!

You can find all of this new concept on this site: The new Petanque (sorry, just today some pages in English).

Please, thank you for forwarding this email to all your contacts from the Petanque circle and to add this new concept on your website.

Sometimes we get questions about bocce court lines.

One email writer asked about one such line.

"There is one in the middle. That's what the pallino has to pass. Then on either side there are 2 lines one is the foul line and what is the other?"

{In the USA Open Rules there is no telling what the line is for. Some places play two lines - one for pointing and one for hitting. Some places there is a line that the pallino can't go past at the far end to start a frame. I guess you'll have to find out the rules from the people who play on those courts - when in Rome...

In international bocce the courts and rules are standardized and very consistent. You don't have these kinds of questions come up very often.}

This week's photos come courtesy of Dan Simon who writes...

"I've attached a pic of our new court located on our twenty acre ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley. As you can see, it overlooks a neighboring vineyard. When we play, we sample the local wines and truly enjoy ourselves. The Valley also has a full fledged league which plays at night."

{Life is good! Please follow dan's lead and send photos of bocce in your neck of the woods.}
