Bocce again Bocce Faithful,

Hey, a warming trend is headed our way. Maybe some of those 9 foot snow piles will melt so I won't have to turn my car around in my driveway to safely enter the street. Backing out "blind" is just too risky.

My son and I have almost wrapped up a video on bocce balls. I've been waiting for some input from St. Pierre because I understand they are an American far nothing. I think that Epco and St. Pierre are the only two American bocce manufacturers and they are both in Massachusetts. That's probably because candlepin and duckpin bowling used to be so popular here in New England that they later transitioned into making bocce balls too.

I think there are only two major Italian manufacturers left standing too - Perfetta and Super Martel. I believe that the rest of the balls being made are coming from China. Do any readers have any other info on manufacturers worldwide? If so, shoot me an email please.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

Just by coincidence I got two separate emails from readers asking about the origin of the Kissing the Fanny scene after getting shut out. Here's an excerpt from the 3rd edition that tells it all...

Kissing The Fanny

Pétanque, it appears, is responsible for the tradition whereby losing bocce or boules teams are obliged to “kiss the fanny.” Kissing fanny is the punishment for losing a game without scoring a single point. ALL players defeated by a shut-out have to kiss the fanny with the winning team serving as witnesses. This is why, wherever boules is played, a figure of a fake fanny is fervidly flaunted. Whether a painting, picture or ceramic sculpture, the unhappy losers are obliged to peck, in public, the usually generous cheeks of the image.

Legend has it that the tradition started in France's Savoy region. The first Fanny (a common first name in France) was a waitress at the Café de Grand-Lemps, circa World War I. A gentle and compassionate soul, she would allow customers who had lost at boules without scoring a solitary point to kiss her on the cheek.

One day it was the village mayor who had been “skunked” and came to collect his kiss. Reportedly, there was “bad blood” between the two, and intending to humiliate the mayor, Fanny stepped up onto a chair, lifted her skirt and offered him... her fanny! The mayor was up to the challenge and, two loud kisses echoed through the café…the beginning of a longstanding tradition...

{If your club or group needs a fanny like the one above right, try .}

"I have a 4 min. video on the history & how to play Bocce that I shot and edited. I am a retired TV News Cameraman from South Florida & love Bocce. I would like you to see it. Then maybe we can put it up for others to see."

{Great! Sounds like a plan to me. Send it on over and we'll share it with the world.}

More on the YouTube Video Scene

It's amazing how some videos go "viral" and get millions of views. Have you seen this one? The 4 1/2 minute video is almost impossible to NOT view all the way to the end. It's inspirational and closing in on 35 million views...

More video...

Here's one sent to me by Joy of Bocce subscriber Dennis Grimaldi of New York. He says "ENJOY!"

I had some good news recently. A national book distributor is considering The Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition. Nothing is definite yet, but the title is in the hands of the person who makes the decision - that's huge!

What it means is that the book would be a lot more likely to be in bookstores and on the shelf when people come browsing. We've had pretty good success without any real national distribution except for my ezine and website. This new development could be important for the growth of the game. I'll keep you posted.

2011 United States Bocce Championships.

Is there anybody in the country who keeps his group better informed than Peter Di Turi of Puget Sound Bocce?

Hello again, Puget Sound Bocce players and fans!

Bocce Alley came to life this past Saturday as the February 2011 Bocce Alley Quad Team Tournament came to the cozy indoor confines of the Tacoma Elks complex! 11 teams participated (up from 6 in the January tourney) as Puget Sound Bocce players eagerly took advantage of a jump-start on the outdoor season and set their hopes on a very interesting summer.

The Auburn Bocce Club #1 Team, which won the January event, was again up for the challenge, as was the inaugural December tournament winner, the home team Tacoma Elks club. But this time they had plenty of company to challenge them.

Unfortunately, it was not the day for the Elks, for after their 12-10 loss to Tacoma rivals Christopher Columbus Society #1 and their 12-2 surprise defeat against Quattro Amici, they had to settle for being gracious hosts once again. But the ABC #1ers had a much better result as captain Sal Cascone and Dave Gordon shot from the left end as Kristy Anderson and Robert Glaze shot from the right, with good scores against In Front (12-2) and Hi Rollers (12-4).

Then they met a combined force comprised of the best of the Westside team (Patrick Henry and son Chris), Seattle Bocce Club (Greg Singleton) and Woodland Park BC (Clement Zipp). ABC #1 tried to rise to the test, but it was the On Target amalgamation that took the match, 12-4 and dropped the ABC #1 squad to the loser's bracket.

But the biggest surprise of the tournament was the Auburn Bocce Club #2 team, which would face On Target in the winner's bracket finale. ABC #2 made their plus mark as a result of a bye and 12-6 victories over Le Quattro Stelle and 12-5 over Christopher Columbus #1. But the less-experienced ABC #2 team suffered the same fate as their more-experienced #1 club team, oddly enough also defeated 12-4 as On Target took the winner's bracket handily.

When ABC #1 dropped into the loser's bracket, they got their game on and made quick haste of Le Quattro Stelle (12-0) and Christopher Columbus #1 (12-5), setting the stage for an ABC #1-ABC #2 showdown where the loser would have to settle for 3rd place. Memories of last summer's Washington State Championship quarterfinal came back as the two top ABC teams dealt with high humidity and a rupturing court surface in their match.

It didn't look good for ABC #2, when after 4 frames they were down 8-0 before clawing one in the 5th and two in the 6th. In the 7th, Cascone made a great point with a left-hand throw instead of using his right-hand. This apparently fired up the ABC #2 squad, for they made a superb comeback with two straight twofers to close the gap to 9-7. At this point, Anderson went to mid-court and had very stern words for teammates Cascone and Gordon on their play. ABC #1 then regrouped and used their experience, playing quality shots in the next two frames, and closed out with a 12-7 victory. ABC #2 would take well-earned 3rd-place medals for their quite enthusiastic play!

ABC #1 now had to face unbeaten On Target in the championship match. Slowly On Target creeped to a 4-1 advantage after four frames, but with two in the 5th and one in the 6th ABC #1 equaled the tallies at four. But in the 7th, On Target took three points and ABC #1 took two, leaving them trailing only 7-6. On Target's star power rose up and fire its deadly salvo of a 1-1-1-2 last-four-frame scoring to stop ABC #1 in its tracks. The 12-6 finale put ABC #1 in second-place (their second straight month of having a top-two finish!) as the red, white and blue ribbons clutching the medallions of gold were clothing the necks of the perfect-shooting On Target squad!

Could this very strong "On Target" team represent the Puget Sound area in the US Nationals tournament in June? No one on the team said "yes". But right now, nobody's saying "no", either!

The Puget Sound Bocce Web channel took advantage of the new Internet link into Bocce Alley, and for a while updates went great. However, a software error in the computer program transmitting the video caused a drop in coverage for a couple of hours. But coverage resumed in time for the live broadcast of the Christopher Columbus #1 - ABC #1 game, and the remaining games of the tourney. Audiences in San Diego and Kansas joined the broadcast for the final games, which had a max of 10 simultaneous viewers. The championship game is now available on-demand on the Puget Sound Bocce Web channel.

March's Bocce Alley Quad Team Tournament will take place on Saturday, 03/12, starting at 10 am. Once again, the tournament will be broadcast live on the Puget Sound Bocce Web channel on starting with the first update at 10 am PST/1 pm EST/5 pm GMT! Updates will continue until the second-to-last game, which will then switch to first-pallino-to-last-bocce coverage.

Keep practicing your bocce this cold month, but please make sure to move the glass coffee table out of the way! Buon gioco and happy bocce to all!

Photos of the week
Bruce Lanke of the North Hills Community Bocce League & St. John's Lutheran Church sends photos of their recent annual Winter Bocce Tourney (2011).

"I just wanted to share pictures with you and your readers of our Annual Winter Bocce Tournament held on Sunday 1/30.

We had 25 players join in on a 28 degree temperature with 7-8 inches of snow on our courts and as every year we play 'Winter Rules' which means we roll in the snow!

The courts are not cleaned and you don't have to cross center line with the pallino, but have to make an attempt.

We do abide by the ten foot line, if the ball would have bounced out of the court it's still alive!

It was a challenge at first as the pallino would tunnel in the snow, you throw to the hole it made then we cleaned away the snow to see who had the point!

This was our 7th year for this event, it's not a true tournament, more of a social as we pick up teams and play several games.

Good food, a warm fire and fellowship was had by all!"

{Our readers LOVE seeing bocce in other parts of the world. Please send photos of bocce in your neck of the woods!}
