The weekly Ezine for bocce aficionados everywhere

Greetings weekly bocce faithful,

News on the Providence, Rhode Island events will be coming soon. I think I posted the wrong date last week (you know how those late night deadlines go). The $ tourney will be Saturday, April 28th and I believe we will offer a one-day event with a maximum of 32 teams that will play in pools with 16 coming out of pool play to enter a single elimination bracket. Stay tuned for more info.

The evening before (Friday, April 27, 2012) will be a charity tourney for the Boys and Girls Clubs. The details should be firmed up in the next couple of weeks and we'll start getting the final word out soon.

Reminder: we are always looking for photos to post on the website and in the ezine. Bocce players LOVE seeing other group's bocce venues and courts. Send them along and I'll post them, giving you credit, of course. Also, send questions and comments - it's all good for the ezine and our readers!

Finally, I'm celebrating my 64th birthday on Tuesday, December 6th. It seems like I just got on the planet. I don't know where those decades went. I played basketball yesterday in a full court age 60 and over league and, it was a struggle. But it's a lot easier playing with 60's then it is with 50's. A fifty year old is a "young pup" today. I try to play defense, but they go around me like I'm standing still. But, like they say today, "It is what it is"...whatever the heck that means. Anyway, I'm not gonna stop playing until they have to carry me off. Luckily, I can still shoot the rock a little, so if you are ever looking for me at the games, I'm the portly guy hanging by the three-point circle.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Our faithful reader Carlo from South Africa sends some interesting pictures.

"Dear Mario,

You may be interested in these pics for a tournament held on the 13/11/2011 at East Rand Italian Club which is in Boksburg, South Africa.

We have clay courts! A great time was had by all.

The South African Italian clubs will be going to Cape Town on the 16,17,18 December for the annual Pallino D'oro to decide the South African champs
( )."

Stay tuned for info on this great event. For now, pencil in late April for a one-day money tourney (Saturday, April 28, 2012. Most likely limited to 32 teams. Details to follow as soon as possible.

I've noticed a rather disturbing trend over the last few months. After spending the last couple years at near the top of search engine searches, we seem to be slipping a tad. We still come up pretty high on most searches but it looks like the Internet is evolving.

Tech savvy people who know how to create videos and blogs and who spend time on Facebook and Twitter and other social networking programs are moving up in the search results, pushing some of us who came on line early down a ways.

I remember searching for Bocce back in the early days of the Internet. Almost nothing came back. I think there were actually no results for the term Bocce. And I remember calling department stores to ask about bocce sets and they'd connect me with another department thinking I was looking for a hibachi.

You have to stay on top of things if you want to be in the forefront. Not such an easy job for an old retired guy like me. Heck, I have to play Bocce on Monday, Tuesday and whenever else we get the chance. Then there's basketball on Thursdays and Sundays. And I need to run some tourneys here and there and I love running corporate I'm pretty busy.

The thing is, I'm not looking for a job. I love being active and running programs, but I'm an old buck who still loves to play. What's the harm in that? I run a senior sports group in honor of my late friend who was a passenger on one of the flights that hit the WTC. We tell everybody who'll listen that's "It's never too late to have a happy childhood!"

An interesting side note to all of this is that I am busier than ever running bocce events all over the place... Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Rhode Island, New York, Washington. Go figure!

Alas! I think it might be time to get involved with Twitter and Facebook and maybe even create a blog. I'll see if my tech savvy son will give me a hand over the holidays to see if we can't push those search numbers up a bit.

There has also been a decline in the number of emails asking bocce questions and promoting all things bocce. That is the lifeblood of the ezine. We need to get back to that level of intensity.

In my first ezine issue some ten years ago I wrote the following and got dozens of responses. Check it out and let me know what you think...

Let’s Talk the Talk – bocce jargon

One of the things that has always fascinated me about bocce is not only the variations of play in pockets across the country, but also the jargon that has evolved in different locations. It bugs me no end when someone asks, “Want to play some bocce ball?” I think of a kid going to the hockey rink or frozen pond and asking his friends if they want to play some “hockey puck.”

Although the game in America is a long way from standardization, it seems to me that we should at least agree to call the game “bocce”, and reserve “bocce ball” for the round object we roll in the direction of the pallino. Some refer to the object ball in the masculine (pallino) while others in the feminine (pallina). I also hear jack, kitty, pill, cue ball, and every variation beginning with the letter P from Pauline to piñata.

Hitting an opponent’s ball to displace it because it is “in” for a point is one of the nifty skill shots in bocce. If it happens to be a red ball that has the point, I’ve heard the other team talk about making a shot called a “Visine” – one that’s designed to “get the red out!” And on the south side of Chicago they “toots it up” when they tap a ball gently to push it closer to the pallino to score the point.

What do players in your area call the object ball? What other colorful language do you hear in your bocce travels? Let me know so I can share it on with our readers. Click REPLY – also let me know what part of the country you are from – I’ll report back next issue.

Tourney and Bocce Events To Post

Every year at this time our list of tourneys gets shorter and shorter. As soon as your 2012 tourney calendar is set, please forward to me so I can post in the ezine. It would be great if we heard from a wide range of places where bocce is alive and growing.

Whether your event is a big money tourney, a fund-raiser, or just a get-together where you want to get the word out to others, please REPLY with the info.

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by DaVinci Bocce's Michael Grasser. They give us a second look at the state-of-the-art synthetic courts at Freeway Lanes in Wickliffe, Ohio. Clubs and bocce groups would be wise to consider installation of these low maintenance and fine rolling courts. Check out the photos and visit for more info.
