I hope the new year is treating you well, bocce gang,

Last week's video on the Clubhawk Gold Accu-Arm got over 400 views. My son and I are planning another one for next week (he said... hopefully). I thought it might be a good idea to use short videos to answer some of the most common questions we get about bocce.

Important info from Volo Superstar Benji Tosi (USBF Populous Director, Western Sector) re: preparing for the World Championships in Volo play...

"As we all know, it is a world championship year and the men's 34th World Bocce Championships in Feltre, Italy, September 4th-11th, 2011 will occur in less than 9 months!

The results of the 2011 US National Bocce Championships at Campo di Bocce Livermore in June will determine the Men's US National Bocce Team, to compete at these 2011 World Bocce Championships in Feltre.

In preparation for the US Volo Nationals at Campo di Bocce Livermore, there are 5 preliminary tournaments on the USBF Western Sector Calendar. These tournaments will only feature the events of Singles, Combination, and Precision Throw; which are the three individual events to be held at the US Nationals in Livermore.

Please see the following link and send it to your bocce friends to get complete information, such as rules and entry forms for the tournaments. All the listed tournaments are for men and women.

We look forward to your support and participation.

Here is also a link to the 2011 World Bocce Championships in Feltre, Italy: "

Luan Giannone sends an email with a question I hope a reader can help with...

"I came to your book signing in Lawrence at the Sons of Italy just before Christmas. At that time I mentioned that my cousin John who is special needs lives in Queens NY and loves the game of Bocce! He plays at Cunningham Park. His life is lonely without the game in the winter months. I understand that he is a very good competitor!

At the time you mentioned you may be able to help me find an indoor place for John to play Bocce in the winter months. Is this still a possibility?"

P.S. John loved your book and especially the Bocce Hat!! He has only had one Bocce hat in life and he said it was in horrible condition. These two things made his Christmas the BEST EVER!!!"

{Can any reader help with this request for a practice venue for John? REPLY and I will get the info to Luan or connect the two of you via email. Long Island's Peter Rabito is doing some research and says...

"Unfortunately, there are no indoor venues local to John that I am aware of other than a couple of bars in Brooklyn NY: Floyd and Union Hall.

He lives in Queens and plays at Cunningham Park which is very near to me. In fact, I probably met him this summer at a Special Olympics tournament there... I would be happy to contact John and invite him to play in my Special Olympics bocce training program in late summer."}

I get a lot of emails with a variation of this sentiment...

"I'm anxious to get back to bocce on a more regular basis even if it's on grass. Well, I'll need to wait a few months for grass to sprout here in Indiana but it will happen.

I got hooked on bocce ball at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos, CA when I was working in San Jose. Although not a stellar player, I'm enthusiastic!"

{Campo di Bocce is such a great venue. I wish we had something like it here in New England. I'm headed back there this June and looking forward to that. I'm no stellar player either, but I love to play!}

My friend and senior softball star Olimpio DeMarco sent Happy New Year wishes and this query...

"Are you aware of all this bocce playing in Boston?"

{Hey Olimpio - What do I look like? A rookie?? I'm the Bocce Guy - there's not much that gets by me.

Lots of "young pups" are playing in the Boston area. That's Great! Don't you just love the team names that they pick?

Joanie Loves Bocce, Nobody Puts Bocce in the Corner, and Bocced Boob Job are a couple I never heard before.}

This from Puget Sound Bocce's tireless Bocce "mover and shaker" Peter Di Turi...

"The Auburn Bocce Club's Annual Meeting is on 01/21/11, 6-9 pm, at the Les Gove Park Multi-Purpose Room. If you are a club member planning to attend this annual dinner event, contact Sal Cascone at or call 253.939.3502.

I welcome Joe Page to our Puget Sound Bocce list, courtesy of Bede Kortegast! Which reminds me - to remind you - to check your bocce equipment before the busy season, and visit Playaboule on-line for your bocce needs!

I also have been talking to Tom McNutt of Boccemon about the idea of a thematic resort tournament showcasing the bocce courts on either Lummi Island or in Roche Harbor in the San Juans. Oh, I 'forgot' - there's all that great food, lodging and scenery, too! Nothing has been set, it's just a 'wish list' item right now.

Local bocce club, tournament and event directors, please do what Sal Cascone has done for the Auburn Bocce Club - provide me dates for your 2011 events as soon as you can do so! I'll post them to a calendar and promptly let everyone on this know of them, so that we all know about major Puget Sound Bocce events this year."

{Send me the tourney and event dates too so I can post them here.}

Ben Musolf sends notice for the 2011 United States Bocce Championships.

If you are local (eastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire) and available to play Monday mornings, shoot me an email and we'll add you to our list. We have openings for a couple players for our Monday morning co-ed league which plays at the Sons of Italy on Marston St. in Lawrence, Mass. Contact .

We should all be card carrying members. Every club should be affiliated. For the sport to gain the attention it needs we need to boast of many thousands of members. Download a USBF Membership Application here: . or

Photos of the week
As you may recall, I used to change the photos of the week every week, replacing last week's pictures with this week's. A couple years ago I changed that policy and started to repost some of the old photos (on the Joy of Bocce web site) where they'll remain permanently.

This week I've reposted some pics that I took in 2002 when I drove out to meet the gang at what was then The Long Island Bocce Club of Huntington, New York. Now they are the American Bocce Club, a thriving organization.

Club mover and shaker Peter Rabito says "It's amazing how clubs can take off in the right direction when surrounded by dedicated and enthusiastic individuals. Since our founding, we have participated annually in Regional and National tournaments, community events and work closely with Special Olympics."

I visited and played bocce at Heckscher Park and Mildam Park. There I met Peter and his enthusiastic group of young bocce up-and-comers including John (Gio) Samaritano, Guy Desantis, and Jeff O'heir.

Bocce product of the week

Playaboule is retailing an interesting measure that I have been playing around with and evaluating. It's a variation of the Clubhawk Gold measure that is so popular with lawn bowls players. The standard Clubhawk Gold Measure is for inside measure (the most accurate) and has a string that extends to touch the ball you are measuring. It's got calipers for the close ones and a belt clip.

The new variation is includes a rocker arm called the "Accu-arm" which makes for an interesting wrinkle on measuring accuracy.

This rocker arm is designed to eliminate moving the target ball during measuring. According to "It is repeatably accurate to 5-6 thousandths of an inch (less than 2 hair widths!!) and due to the 'no load lever' will not push a ball away even on a smooth surface."

There are three lines on top of the Accu-arm that will line up when the arm is touching the pallino and in the proper place to begin measuring. This can easily be seen from above, which is simpler than bending over, kneeling down, etc. to get a decent vantage point. Once the black lines align (see photos by clicking the image above right), you depress the "brake" to extend the string for measuring. Then repeat the process to measure other balls in contention. String extends to 9 feet.

{WATCH A TWO MINUTE VIDEO DEMO ON YOUTUBE: } says "The Accu-Arm method of measuring is to transfer the target ball readings to the top of the measure where it is easiest to read.

This device can handle target balls from 1 inch to 2.5 inches which is the complete range for, Petanque, Bocce and Lawn Bowls.

Extending up to 9ft in length, this measuring device is great for measuring even those longer shots.

ClubHawk measure is Imported by Playaboule from England. The USA designed Accu-Arm is precision manufactured and fitted in the USA."
