Hello my bocce friends,

March is here and that means we Easterners can start thinking about the spring outdoor bocce season. Well, at least we can start THINKING about it.

March gets hectic for me as I wind up my non-profit group's basketball season and organize for the upcoming softball season. Of course, our bocce leagues run year round and I'm also trying to wrap up the next edition of the Joy of Bocce (while attempting to get an ezine out each week). It's good to be busy, but this is ridiculous! I complain a lot, but I LOVE it!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...

Jerry Cailotto says...

"I am starting a combined Golf/Bocce event for our club…any ideas on a good name for that event? Play 9 holes of golf, and then have a 20 minute timed event of Bocce and then play the back 9 holes… each 4-some will have two teams for bocce, that’s the format we want to use."

{Sounds good to me. Any reader have an idea for what to call this multi-sport event that sandwiches bocce between the front and back nines of golf? I'd call it a Drive, Point, and Putt contest. I'd like to hear how this turns out and would love to see some photos.}

Joy of Bocce 3rd edition update

Got a quick answer from the Massachusetts publisher who expressed interest in the new bocce book and I thought you might get a kick out of it...

"Good afternoon, Mario:

Many thanks for sending us The Joy of Bocce. Unfortunately it does not fit in our schedule.

I do wish you luck; it's such a healthy sport!"

The following photos I am still looking for and hoping that Joy of Bocce Weekly readers can contribute and help shape the new edition.

Some readers have agreed to start searching their photo archives, bit only a few photos have shown up in my in box so far.

A good shot or two of people playing bocce on the beach, either at low tide or high or both;

People playing Petanque;

People playing Lawn bowls;

People measuring for point with different devices and with different styles (e.g. they run a tape from the pallino to the top center of the ball and estimate the center of the ball – or inside measurement, etc.);

People playing on the lawn;

People playing on hilly terrain;

Young people playing, especially high school, middle school, and elementary school age if possible.

Again, I'm hoping that readers can help shape the new edition, which I have promised myself to wrap up in the next couple months so it can be released in the summer.

Please REPLY if you can. Many thanks in advance.

Also...does anyone have a suggestion about who might write a foreword for the book? I've contacted one pretty high profile person, but received no response.

I liked Elizabeth Jade Fontana's email to the bocce troops for her upcoming tourney so much that I asked her permission to reprint some of it. It shows how one person with some drive and organizational skills can put together something really outstanding.

"Well, we are coming down the home stretch here. Thank God! I wanted to confirm the name of your team, and to see if there will be visitors joining us for lunch March 6th. I have the cook preparing the lunches for 48 participants, but I know that some of you may be having family members or friends cheering your team on. Please let me know how many visitors will be joining us for lunch at the Italian Athletic Club. The cost will be only $10 per person. I will tell the manager to make extra lunches for the visitors that are confirmed. Please let your team members know this, and have them or you send me a 'head count'.

We are fortunate to have several sponsors of our tournament. A special thanks to Mike Grasser of DaVinci Bocce , our major sponsor. One very lucky participant will win the beautiful Super Martel 'Geos" bocce balls and the bag. Also there will be 6 winners of the special ball cloths from DaVinci Bocce.

Two magnificent fruit baskets arranged and donated by Don Lovecchio of Lovecchio Produce will also be awarded.

Richard Bozzano, a local farmer has a special gift for all of our participants. I can't wait to see what it is!

I know how we all love eating Italian food, so we have a special donation of the popular Italian cookbook 'Cooking Dinner: Simple Family Recipes that Everyone Can Make Together' by Rima Barkett and Claudia Pruett . There will be 2 lucky winners of this fantastic book. I have invited Rima to give a short presentation and a book signing at the lunch. There will be some copies available for purchase.

I know that most of the women are going to be very competitive, but for those who don't end up in the semi-finals, one of our sponsors, Bill Shawver of Hula Girl tropical cocktails, is supplying us with free samples of their beverages. I know that I am going to need a drink or two.

Women's Mixed Categories teams:

Navina Bernardi, Teena Marie Bruzzoni, Natalina Bernardi (I need a name please. How about "Bocce to the Power of B"?)

"Raffatouille" Colleen Randazzo, Diana Pellegrini, and ?

"Bocce Babes" Jo Ann Jacobs, Sharon Cooper, Nancy

"Two Lucky Laggers with a Woo" Teresa Wagstaff, Joyce Woo, Gloria Taylor

"Pallino Pals" Laura Delarosa, Shirley Croce, Carol Del Prete

"Bocce Blasters" Lydia Romo, Norma De Paoli, Joyce Ashenbrenner

"Bocce Girls" Debbie Sullivan, Doris Perez, Ida Quierolo

Women's Entry-level teams:

"Double Shot" Tony Randazzo, Bev Wright, Toni ?

"It's Complicated" Bob Kennedy, Mini ?, Sharon Page

"Guess Who" Norris Gooler, Marilyn Greco, Lydia Traverso

"Azzurri" Mario Veltri, Diane Contreras, Ursala

"Shooters" Drew Page, Lee Cerri, Judy Canclini

I need names from these teams:

Gerald Gilligan, Amanda Podesta, Pat Ross
Mike Croce, Lena Vasconcellos, Velma ?
Norm Freschette, Susie Peluso, Pauline Meyers

I will be taking photos and video of this first time event (category play in the USA has not been done at this level before), especially the awarding of the 18kt. gold Italian bocce medals (6 in all). I will keep you posted."

Rockman president Mike Esposito is none other than the BC running back with all the rushing records and a stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.

With Esposito on board we’ll TACKLE any job. Call for a no-risk quote. Mike can BLOCK any objection. If you need to see schematics, we can set up a DRAW PLAY. We’ll help you pick the best location on your property for the bocce LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. We’re very concerned with maintaining the integrity of your lawn and yard area. We’ll minimize the use of heavy machinery, replacing it with man-power to minimize any ENCROACHMENT on your property.

No one wants a construction crew on site for weeks on end, so there will be no DELAY OF GAME. We’ll BLITZ through the construction, getting in and out of the job site in record time. Mike has experience in CONTROLLING THE GAME CLOCK, and can even add DOUBLE COVERAGE or HURRY-UP OFFENSE if necessary to finish the job on schedule. Says Mike, “I want my crew to get DOWN AND IN quickly and DOWN AND OUT just as fast.

As an added bonus, the Bocce Guy will make frequent visits to the work site, taking photos for The Joy of Bocce and helping to make sure that the crew continues to make FORWARD PROGRESS. Make no mistake though, Mike is the FRANCHISE player. He’s the SIGNAL CALLER, running the show right from the opening KICKOFF, making sure you are happy with the finished product.

Call the Bocce Guy at 978-686-8679 or email and we’ll set a no risk appointment to look at your potential job site.

Matt Narducci (self proclaimed Bocce Fanatic) asks...

"I love your e-zine. I live in Ashtabula, OH, where bocce has been played competitively on courts now for about 9 years only, and I love this game. I have been inspired by your stories about Ben Tosi and I hopefully will have enough funds put together to build my own court this fall in my yard, but we’ll see. My question is, once I have a court of my own, where would one purchase brass or steel 107mm bocce balls used in volo? I have looked but have not been able to find them anywhere. I would like to start practicing volo, just to see if I am any good at it and I want to practice using official brass balls. Any information you could provide me would be fantastic. Keep up the good work! Thanks."

{Rico Daniele ( or Ben Tosi ( are two promoters who enjoy the volo game and may have the volo balls in stock.}

Peter Rabito, Vice-President of The United States Bocce Federation (USBF) sends this...

Photos of the week
This week's photos come courtesy of Connecticut's Brian Christiano.

He says...

"Hello Bocce Guy,

Attached are some pics of my bocce court. I'm not sure if the resolution is good enough for your book but you are welcome to use them if they are. I have your book from the 1995 publishing.

Built the court with the help of some friends. Just re-surfaced it last year. Replaced the stone dust with the Har-Tru. It's the best decision I ever made. What a surface!

I'm in Harwinton, Connecticut so, unfortunately, I won't be able to take any good pics for a few months.

Thanks for the newsletter, I read every one."

{Excellent - a couple photos, permission to reprint, a thank you...what could be better? I know what could be better: more people following Brian's lead and sending pics.}

Bocce product of the week

Bede Kortegast offers this great promotion after much discussion in previous week's ezines on bocce for the color blind:

"I thought that as a favor to your readers we would offer a discount of $50 a set off our pro balls.

This would be a one time deal and be available for only till we place our big order with Perfetta.

"The promotional code you can enter is mp40pro - This is done on the checkout page in a box called 'Promotional Code' and will be subtracted from the product cost there.

Delivery for them will be in approx. 10 weeks. Because these will be a special order, payment is upfront and the sets are not returnable or exchangeable."
