Hi Bocce Gang,

Update on Logan Debrocke - he's in Dusseldorf, Germany with his family and we have "Skyped" him. Now I know how Oprah feels...sort of. Logan's procedure will take place on Wednesday and we are all hoping for the best.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to Logan's fund-raiser. We'll keep you posted.

In an unrelated item, I am surprised more people haven't taken advantage of the wonderful offer from Playaboule. Bede Kortegast has created a special promotion so that Joy of Bocce readers can get $50 off the price of Playaboule's professional (4-ball) bocce sets. See Bocce product of the week below. Don't miss out on this limited time offer. Also, he's offering an exclusive to Joy readers who can win free prizes for evaluating his updated web site - see details below under Bocce news...

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Backyard court of Joe Sandri, Sr. (Columbus, Georgia).

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

Florence, Kentucky's Ken Long poses a question...

"I want to set up a template court at work for us to play on at lunch by putting tape on the carpet to delineate the court boundaries. In the spring, we’ll move outside using flat vinyl edging.

On page 175 of your book, you say that “any ball…out of the rectangle is out of play.” This makes good sense. How should the situation be handled when the pallino is knocked out of bounds? Would you please tell us what to do in this case and with any other oddities that we might encounter with this way of playing?"

{That's about the only oddity, except sometimes the bocce balls comes to rest right on the line. You'll have to decide on whether you want to declare that ball IN or OUT. I'd say it was in unless the ball was completely outside the line.

We treat the pallino being knocked out the same way we do on bocce courts with side boards. Whenever the pallino is hit out of the court, the frame is dead and no points can be scored. Play starts over with the same team rolling the pallino as in the previous frame. You might want to try to keep the pallino in the middle and not so deep to make it less likely that it will be knocked out of play.

It is interesting to note that in the recent Pallino D'Oro at the Palazzo di Bocce, I saw some very good players who, realizing that a frame wasn't going so well for them, intentionally knocked the target ball out (no easy shot). In other words, one player could see that his opponent was likely to score multiple points and opted to kill the frame by striking the pallino with great force, hoping to launch it out of play.

Toronto 777 Club member Eddy DeCillia put on a show the likes of which few have ever seen, sending the international size pallino into the stands at least six times in the finals against eventual North American Pallino d'Oro winner Jose Botta.}

Joy of Bocce 3rd edition update

My revised goal is to put this project “to bed” by the end of March (that would be March 2010, not March 2011). Then maybe we’ll have the book in hand by the summer bocce season.

In my defense, the text is pretty well finished. The problem is sifting through myriads of photos in an attempt to select just the right ones to complement the text.

I’m still seeking a publisher while evaluating two print-on-demand outfits just in case I don’t land one.

As I go through this process I could use a little help with some photographs. They must be high resolution and must be accompanied by your permission to reprint.

The following are what I am looking for and hoping that Joy of Bocce Weekly readers can contribute and help shape the new edition. I am trying to stage some of these photos myself, but the lack of suitable indoor venues in my area hampers my efforts.

A good shot or two of people playing bocce on the beach, either at low tide or high or both;

People playing Petanque;

People playing Lawn bowls;

People measuring for point with different devices and with different styles (e.g. they run a tape from the pallino to the top center of the ball and estimate the center of the ball – or inside measurement, etc.);

People playing on the lawn;

People playing on hilly terrain;

Young people playing, especially high school, middle school, and elementary school age if possible.

Again, I'm hoping that readers can help shape the new edition, which I have promised myself to wrap up in the next couple months so it can be released in the summer.

Please REPLY if you can. Many thanks in advance.

Playaboule's Bede Kortegast has revised his web site, wants feedback from web surfers, and will put your name in for a drawing for free bocce merchandise.

Here are the prizes...

A free set of the Club Pro Solid or Deluxe Lighted Bocce set.

A free 4 color Bocce set.

A free Premier Measure.

"To be in the drawing the readers must send an email to with their comments, good or bad about the look and feel of the site, navigation, things they would like to see, is the checkout easy, even what do they think of the prices, etc.

I’ll also offer a free set of Perfetta club pros to the most detailed response.

So, the total 'prize' values including the shipping costs for the mainland USA only is approx $400!

We will reserve the right to use the responses but will not post any contact details.

Of course, I want those that do enter the 'competition' to look at several pages of the site. To make sure that this is done, I will need at least a few comments from those that want to be in the drawing and they must also put the price of the M6 series balls and the Premier Measurer in their comment/entry for the drawing. This will show me that they have at least looked at a few pages to find those prices."

{Hey, how tough is that? Just surf around a bit, give some feedback on what you like or don't like. Put the listed price of the items to show that you were paying attention and be eligible for the drawings.

This reminds me of when I was teaching high school. There were quite a few scholarships that didn't get applied for because the applicant had to write an essay on some subject. I remember cajoling a student of mine into completing the essay, telling her "You'll probably be the only one in the running if you finish the essay." Reluctantly she complied and later thanked me vociferously when she collected the $500 scholarship.

Go tool around the site for a while, give some honest feedback. You'll be helping Playaboule refine its web site and you'll have a shot at some great prizes.}

Rockman president Mike Esposito is none other than the BC running back with all the rushing records and a stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.

With Esposito on board we’ll TACKLE any job. Call for a no-risk quote. Mike can BLOCK any objection. If you need to see schematics, we can set up a DRAW PLAY. We’ll help you pick the best location on your property for the bocce LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. We’re very concerned with maintaining the integrity of your lawn and yard area. We’ll minimize the use of heavy machinery, replacing it with man-power to minimize any ENCROACHMENT on your property.

No one wants a construction crew on site for weeks on end, so there will be no DELAY OF GAME. We’ll BLITZ through the construction, getting in and out of the job site in record time. Mike has experience in CONTROLLING THE GAME CLOCK, and can even add DOUBLE COVERAGE or HURRY-UP OFFENSE if necessary to finish the job on schedule. Says Mike, “I want my crew to get DOWN AND IN quickly and DOWN AND OUT just as fast.

As an added bonus, the Bocce Guy will make frequent visits to the work site, taking photos for The Joy of Bocce and helping to make sure that the crew continues to make FORWARD PROGRESS. Make no mistake though, Mike is the FRANCHISE player. He’s the SIGNAL CALLER, running the show right from the opening KICKOFF, making sure you are happy with the finished product.

Call the Bocce Guy at 978-686-8679 or email and we’ll set a no risk appointment to look at your potential job site.

Kurt Everett will soon be opening his...

Bocce Basement

"Kansas City 's Indoor Lawn Bowling"
14130 W. 135th St
Olathe , Kansas 66061

Opening in the Spring of 2010, the Bocce Basement will feature Six 60' X 10' indoors courts. The venue will have a fully stocked bar and plans to specialize in League play and hosting corporate team-builders, birthday parties, and other group functions. Website: Also connect at

{Sounds great, but Kurt might want to think about changing "indoor lawn bowling" to something that doesn't confuse people who know that lawn bowling is a cousin to bocce, but not the same game. How about just Kansas City's Indoor Bocce Center?}

Bill Papagno says...

"It seems that all the Bocce clubs and associations are in Northern California area. I'm looking for somewhere to play in Southern California. Preferably in the San Fernando Valley or San Gabriel Valley, I live six minutes from the Rose Bowl in Montrose, California.

I am willing to travel if it's not too far. Please let me know if you know of any place, or if you can put the word out to find a place."

{Can you help? Contact Bill at .}

Photos of the week
This week's photos come courtesy of Kansas resident Fred Wilburn.

"I have been wanting to send/show you my homemade Bocce court photos for sometime, but continually put it off. Here are six photos of my backyard International size court (91' x 13' or 27.7 meters by 3.9 meters).

Court construction was gleaned from Internet sources. The surface is crushed limestone from our local quarry here in Johnson County Kansas.

I've debated on whether to top the court with either red clay or the Har-Tru material. In either case shipping from either coast areas make the cost questionable for the resulting improvement of surface. If the court is slightly damp like a clay court would be, then the action on the court is near perfect, but I don't have any experience on the other two mentioned surfaces to compare.

I'm new to the game, but have an avid interest and it is a great retirement activity to keep me busy grooming the court. Anyway, do as you wish with the pictures of Buzzard Hollow International Bocce Court, probably the only one in the state of Kansas other than a couple of municipal courts in the southeast Kansas area where there are some Italian communities."

{Great shots of a great court. Fred is right about the shipping charges often being cost prohibitive, depending on how far you are from the source. That's a problem for bocce court builders all over the USA.

Fred gives permission to use the photos, so I will likely include one in the new book. There is still time to get yours included. Send your best high resolution shots to me at .}

Bocce product of the week

Bede Kortegast offers this great promotion after much discussion in previous week's ezines on bocce for the color blind:

"I thought that as a favor to your readers we would offer a discount of $50 a set off our pro balls.

This would be a one time deal and be available for only till we place our big order with Perfetta.

"The promotional code you can enter is mp40pro - This is done on the checkout page in a box called 'Promotional Code' and will be subtracted from the product cost there.

Delivery for them will be in approx. 10 weeks. Because these will be a special order, payment is upfront and the sets are not returnable or exchangeable."
