Season's Greetings my bocce friends!

Final reminder: I hope that any of you who are in my neck of the woods will make an effort to attend the Book Signing and Free Bocce Play on Tuesday, December 21st from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. The event will be held at the Sons of Italy at 155 Marston St. in Lawrence, Mass.

So, come on down, roll a couple bocce balls on the three newly refurbished, carpeted courts, have a little holiday cheer, and help support our efforts to promote the game we love! We'll have some bocce items for sale in case you need to purchase a gift for a bocce lover in your life.

Also, check out the special offer from Playaboule exclusively for Joy of Bocce Weekly subscribers that runs only until Christmas. See the details below under "Bocce news and readers' feedback."

Finally, I hope you will consider purchasing a bocce product or two from the Joy of Bocce website. The new edition of the book is always a good option, as are measures, or any of the embroidered items with the striking Joy of Bocce logo.

Check the choices out here:

Playaboule's Bede Kortegast offers...

"The brand new V3 Glo bocce set only to your readers.
That deal is they buy 2 of these and the second set they get 50% off. Our existing sets have been extremely popular and I know that this is going to be a hit as well. 90% of our sales are word of mouth so the more we get out there the more we sell.

I designed these with all these new features:

1) Water resistant;

2) External recessed plug has BOTH flashing and non flashing built into the switch. No need to buy 2 sets of plugs;

3) Screwless quick change battery compartment. No screw to lose and batteries can be changed 'in the field' in seconds;

4) New 50mm white ball (pallina) with both flashing and non flashing built in. We've actually sold the smaller 40mm size to a number of people as a spare part to go with their regular bocce set so they have a bright target to aim for at dusk and beyond. This new ball can be purchased by itself here

5) Added a plastic tab between the batteries so now the test ones that we leave in can't be bumped on during shipping;

6) new 3d logo on deluxe bag.

To get the deal all your readers need to do is order 2 and enter santamario in the Promotion field on the checkout page."

{What a great deal for our subscribers! I've tried the set and these bocce balls are absolutely fabulous. Once you activate the balls for play it's just a matter of tapping a recessed button once to get the ball flashing and twice to keep it illuminated (a third tap shuts it back off). This set is highly recommended.

It's a great set for tossing on the beach on a warm summer night after dark or anywhere where there is a relatively soft landing place (not concrete or crushed stone). But they can be rolled along the ground as well.

Check it out at Playaboule - order 2 sets and use the code santamario (all lower case) to get the special Joy of Bocce subscriber discounted price... }

If you are in my neighborhood, please come on down Tuesday, December 21st to the Sons of Italy at 155 Marston St. in Lawrence, Mass. I'm doing a book signing and we're offering Open Bocce to all on the three newly refurbished, carpeted courts.

From 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM we'll have some spirited bocce play, perhaps a little Christmas cheer, and you'll have the opportunity to purchase an autographed copy of the Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition, or other bocce items.

And there will be FREE bocce lessons if you never played before.

I sometimes think, "What if you did a book signing and nobody showed?" Hey, come on down, play a little bocce and maybe pick up a specially autographed copy of the new edition of the Joy of Bocce. One Christmas season a few years back we did something like this at a local Barnes and Nobles bookstore and it was extremely successful. Heck, everybody knows someone who plays bocce, and the book is an inexpensive holiday gift. Hope to see you there.

Mitch from USA Bocce sends tourney news...

"Last year I had 30 teams from the the USA and Canada. I was able to to donate $1000 to our local chapter of the Special Olympics. This being the second tournament should be more successful.

The 2nd Annual 4 Person Tournament for The Special Olympics will be held at the Bessemer Croatian Club in Bessemer, PA on June 3-4-5th. More information will be posted @

This will be the highest pay-out tournament in Pennsylvania."

Please follow Mitch's lead and Send Us Your 2011 Tourney Dates...

The listing for tournaments at the end of the ezine tends to get shorter and shorter as the holiday season closes in on us. Please send me your 2011 tourney info ASAP. I keep your listing posted until your tournament is completed, so the sooner you send the info to me the more exposure it will receive.

We get lots of listings from the West Coast, but not nearly as many from around the rest of the country. So, come on, shoot me an email with the details - the sooner the better.

Dave Leveton is looking for a bocce court builder...

"I have your book and read it and enjoyed it very much. I live in Gainesville, VA not too far from Washington DC. Our bocce court needs repair and we also have an opportunity to possibly construct a second court.

I need some bocce contractors in the area. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help."

{Any builders in that area with some expertise? Contact }

Got a great offer to do a book signing and bocce promotion in Key West Florida in January. I'll keep you posted if it comes to fruition. Maybe, if you are nearby, you can drop in and say Hello.

The group reportedly has 56 teams, divided into 4 divisions (14 each night) and an average of 8 players a team.

Special Edition News...

I'm attempting to get copies of The Joy of Bocce 3rd edition into as many bocce clubs, groups or organizations as possible as there is a definite time lag in getting them into the bookstores. Many people responded by email to the offer.

The idea is that groups can purchase at discount by the case (36 per case) and retail at the full price. This will I hope get some "Buzz" going about the book and the sport that might catch on with the bocce community at large.

I've worked hard to make this edition the one that will help this game grow - now starts the tough part - the marketing! Please help if you can. Call me at 978-686-8679 or email for more details.

Can any reader help with this...from Karen Mascho?

"I am an Adapted PE teacher in Kilgore, TX. I am beginning to teach bocce to my APE class. I have Special Olympians and para-athletes in my class. I am looking into bocce as a way of combining both groups into one activity. I would like to plug my kids into a Bocce League for lifetime participation. I have looked on the Internet and have not found any venues in Northeast Texas.

What are the closest ones you know of? I would like to take my kids on a field trip or at least have videos to show youth tournaments."

Photos of the week

Check out these three photos. My friend Ralph Bagarella had a Rico Daniele scoreboard mounted at center court at his Salem, NH home. Since he likes to play a lot of "cut-throat," he had a talented friend and neighbor custom build a replacement scoreboard that slides in to take the place of the original scoreboard. The new scoreboard has dials and arrows for 3 teams - one each for green, red, and white bocce.

I've posted the photos permanently on the Joy of Bocce website under "Bocce Tidbits". Please follow Ralph's lead and send pics of bocce happenings in your area.
