Hello my faithful bocce friends,

Last week on eBay I posted for auction a nailed boule from my private collection. It "killed" me to let it go, but my significant other says I need to be less selfish and share with my readers. So, I relented. I posted a second one last week and a third one this week. Check them out under "Non-bocce product of the week". You could own a piece of our game's history.

I have come into a great many other items too - art work, collectibles, costume jewelry, and all sorts of curios. Check out the eBay product of the week. There will be so many different items that something is bound to interest you.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

The nailed boules that I've posted on eBay continue to cause a pretty big stir. Lots of people are interested in owning a piece of bocce history. So, I posted yet another one this week - this one with the "fishscale" nail arrangement. That's it in the photo to the right.

There's still time to bid on the second boule - but you'd better hurry. If you win both I could combine the shipping and the two would ship for the same cost as one.

Take a peek at these. They are very collectible in Europe and pretty rate. In antique stores in the states they often sell for $95 to $225 and more. Hey, you can own a piece of our game's history. Great conversation pieces.

See product of the week below...

Pat Pezzin sends this...

"I'm forwarding everyone on behalf of Ciociaro Bocciofila their Annual Nino D'Aversa Doubles tournament taking place on October 23rd weekend.

Hope to see most of you guys there. If you require information on the event I believe Santino DiPalma would be the best contact. His name and number on application."

World Bocce League's Phil Ferrari got some good PR for himself and bocce recently...

Elizabeth Jade Wong Fontana sends this video from Rome.

"It is of the men's championship, where Formicone comes from behind to win the game."

{Note: this is a little long, but great to watch. There are great shots of the fabulous bocce venue. It is interesting to watch the strategies employed and to see that such high level players make an occasional bad shot here and there (not so many, but it's comforting to know that they sometimes misfire too).

I notice that the two seem to roll the ball off the fingertips when pointing, something I had great difficulty doing on those super fast surfaces. I guess I have to keep at it...assuming I can get to play on those surfaces again sometime soon.}

Lot more news from the World Championships

This from Danny Passaglia...

"Just wanted to give everyone an update. The drawing was held today and witnessed by many officials, dignitaries and the Italian Coach and players. For anyone interested in following the 'live streaming feed', you simply go to .

You will see on the HOME page the last listing which is streaming mondiale Roma. Click on that and it should take you to the live video. Keep in mind the play will begin on Tuesday at 9am and continue until 7:30pm Italian time. That would mean 3am Eastern, 2am Central and Midnight out West. Probably the later games will be easier to see. Monday evening will be the opening ceremonies approx:7:30pm IT, so you might want to check that out as well. I will try to give you updates but I believe if you check the above mentioned site, you will get all the info you need including results within 24 hours. Here are the draws for our athletes and my comments:

Men: Jorge Moreno === Jorge was seeded (4th place in 2005) so he got into (Round # 8 ) and he was also 'lucky' because he is in a group of only 3 players and 2 will advance to Sweet 16! He drew - Serbia and Morocco neither one a World powerhouse. He must beat at least one of them.

Women: Maria Narayan === Maria is in a group of 6 (Round # 2) and will have a bit tougher time because only the top 2 from the group advance to semi finals (8players). She drew - Brazil, Russia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Libya. In my opinion to advance she will need to beat Brazil and Russia and not take Bulgaria lightly. Certainly she has her work cut out for herself but she can do it.

Under 21: Joey Bernardi === Joey is also in a group of 6 (Round # 1) with the top 2 advancing. He drew - Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, San Marino. He will need to beat San Marino and or Croatia in my opinion. Having Italy in his group actually helps because the Italian will beat everyone else so Joey needs to play well against the Italian and beat one or both of the players I mentioned.

You can find all the groups on the same website but you will need to 'hunt' a little more to find them but everything about the Worlds will be on this site. Best of luck to our players, the drawing is done and the contest will soon begin."

Elizabeth is the correspondent on the spot and says...

"This may be the last Internationals that I will be covering, so I hope that America will have ESPN to step in and give us better sports coverage. Please remember to sign in for ."

John Ross sends his ideas too...

"I would like to let you and your readers know about a direct link they can use to go directly to the web for all the information about the World Punto, Raffa, Volo Championships that start on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. This site is found on the Italian Bocce
Federation site at .

It takes some effort to find this page so I recommend that your readers copy and paste this address into their web browser:

This will make it easy to follow the results, see the countries' rosters, look at photos etc. and you can click on a direct link from this page to live video streaming of the games.

You can include this link in your next e-zine so your readers can follow the action next week from Rome!"

John Ross
Past President, United States Bocce Federation
Member of the Executive Executive Committee, Confederazione Boccistica Internazionale

Ben Musolf sends advance notice for the 2011United States Bocce Championships.

I have also put together a Bocce Series call the 'Raffa Showdown Series." It will entail weekly tournaments either singles or doubles, single elimination style. I have also attached the entry forms for this event. If anybody ever asks how to promote Raffa, please feel free to recommend this."

Now that the Joy of Bocce 3rd edition is hitting the bookstores, I could use a few reviews (positive ones, he said, hopefully) and a host of resellers (who want to purchase in quantity at wholesale and sell at retail - contact me at ).

In case you missed it - you just HAVE to see this shot...

Robert L. Agnelly sends a reminder...

"Come join us in New Orleans the week-end of October 15-17 for an exciting Bocce Tournament. If you have never visited our Bocce Club in Metairie, Louisiana, please visit our web site at to get a good look at our indoor, air conditioned club and courts. We are located approximately 5 miles from New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and a short ride to the French Quarter. Lodging is available at the Days Hotel across the street from the Bocce Club at the special rate of $65 a night. Our tournament will be limited to 20 teams, so every team will play several games over the week-end."

United States Bocce Federation president Danny Passaglia sends news of a way we can support the USBF by signing up for a VISA card.

Frank Valanzola sends this...

Dear Bocce Supporter:

As many of you know the New Jersey Bocce Invitational supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Your vote will make a big difference in saving the lives of kids. Here's how. The Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away $20 million in grants to "people, businesses, and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive impact." And the New Jersey Bocce Invitational is in the running for $50,000! This will allow us to continue to support the children undergoing cancer treatment through St. Jude Research Hospital. And we need your votes to win!

Vote by clicking on this link:

For the remainder of September, people can vote once a day, so I'm hoping you could help spread the word by emailing friends, tweeting about our idea, posting about it on Facebook or coming up with other creative ways to get people to vote. EVERY VOTE COUNTS!

You can also view a 3-minute video detailing how to help by clicking:

We greatly appreciate your helping us accomplish this goal. Your support would mean the world.

We should all be card carrying members. Every club should be affiliated. For the sport to gain the attention it needs we need to boast of many thousands of members. Download a USBF Membership Application here: . or

Bocce at Lawrence, Mass. Festival...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Lori Maraviglia, the Wine Club Coordinator for Baileyana & Tangent Wineries.

Says Lori...

"I’m a subscriber to your online newsletter, and I noticed that you do tournaments. We have a tasting room in San Luis Obispo, CA - located in a 100 year old one room schoolhouse - with 2 full sized bocce courts (oyster shell over decomposed granite) next to the tasting room.

Do you know of anyone near here that will do tournaments? I’m thinking that it would be a great event for our wine club members. I could probably put the event on myself, but I’d love to have the experts here to run it! I attached a picture of the courts and one of the tasting room."

{The address is 5828 Orcutt Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. Tasting Room Phone: (805)269-8200. Check out .

This would be a great job for me, but I don't think they want to fly me across the country to handle it. Any takers? I ran this email once before. This is a great job for someone - beats working for a living!}

Bocce product of the week
The Joy of Bocce - 3rd edition - Finally off the presses!

Designed to grab the attention of the masses

High resolution, colorful, eye-catching cover

200 pages of info, skills, techniques and strategies

100 high res photos and diagrams throughout

Photos contributed from around the USA

Retails for $18.45.

Don't look for lots of new text in this new edition. What I've done is tighten it and replace all the low res photos with high res ones, making the book much more accessible to the masses. The new book is comprehensive like the previous editions, but better suited for the mass market, not just bocce fanatics.

The new cover is eye-catching, the photos are pretty spectacular, and I feel great about the potential this edition will have on the growth of the game. I'm really proud of it and I think you will really enjoy it.

Non bocce product of the week
I've come into possession of a great many collectible items. I have all manner of items including costume jewelry, art work, and all kind of curios. So, I thought I'd give eBay a whirl.

Some item links to eBay below - for others bookmark StrikerPag...

Nailed boule - from my private collection. I’ve come into a collection of polished nailed boules. My wife keeps telling me that I have so many now (probably 100 or so) that I should sell a few so that others could enjoy them too.

“Blasphemy! I’m not selling my collection at any price” I protest.

Alas! She breaks me down, using the old standby “guilt trip” and completes the blitz by playing the “selfish card” until I relent.

Here's one with squarehead nails and one single brass nail for identification purposes. You'll have to hurry to bid on this one as the auction ends 9/27 at about 5:30 PM Eastern Time.

I've posted a third one - this one with the so-called "fishscale" nail arrangement.

Here's a really interesting piece. It's a sterling silver medallion a little bigger than a quarter dollar. It is marked "Frigidaire Medal of Honor" and apparently was awarded to top salespeople at the company.

Marked "Sterling" and "Christmas 1930". It weighs in at 11 g (0.3 oz.).
