Hello my bocce friends,

Thanks to all who sent permissions to reprint photos in the new edition of The Joy of Bocce. I finally got all the issues resolved and the design and layout team has started putting the manuscript and photos together. I hope to have the new book in hand by late July/early August. That's what print on demand technology can do nowadays.

For at least the next six or eight weeks I plan to play around on eBay for the non-bocce product of the week. I have come into a great many items - art work, collectibles, costume jewelry, and all sorts of curios. I'll give eBay a whirl and see what transpires. Check out the eBay product of the week. There will be so many different items that something is bound to interest you.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Russell Bledsoe sends photos and an email update...

"Thought you might find this interesting. We built these courts (bocce & horseshoe) a couple of years ago when we first moved into the house. I’ll look around for original images of the woods where this is now built. Needless to say it was quite overgrown and since the house we live in was built back in the mid 1700’s, this area was what they must have used as a dumping ground.

We pulled everything from old farm tools to parts from turn of the century vehicles - personally I think this is much better use of the space.

We originally surfaced the bocce court with stone dust over compacted ¾” stone. This worked alright, but was never a great surface. This year we went with a 1” cover of Har-Tru and what a difference, it has changed the entire game for us, and are very pleased with the results.

The court itself is 90' x 11' (just couldn't make it any wider) & fully lit for night games. We also added the benches this year.

Just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for the great reads on your site, it's what spurred me on to take it to the next level.

{This was a great read for me. I remember that when I played bocce in Connecticut years ago, there were a surprising number of players who played both bocce and horseshoes. Click the photo for a better view of Russell's horseshoe pit and bocce court.}

Zander Ponzo keeps the ideas coming on the Burlington, Vermont bocce scene...

Why: Have Fun, Compete, Raise Money for Charity, and Perhaps Win

When: Wednesday, June 30 at 6:45pm

Where: Bocce Courts at Oakledge Park

How Much: $5.00 - 50% for Charity of Choice (we will decide at event) and other 50% for top two placers

What: For each of three distances, five balls are thrown attempting to get as close to the pallino as possible.. At each distance the worst ball's score is not counted toward total. At one distance, four balls thrown to displace pallino at least five feet from its resting place. Twenty centermeters are deducted for each hit from one's
'distance from pallino' total.

Additional: If there is interest, there will be contests in July, August, and September. There will be a championship event in October for the top five finishers who have participated in each month's contest. Surprise awards for the top two finishers.

Lori Maraviglia writes...

"I’m a subscriber to your online newsletter, and I noticed that you do tournaments. We have a tasting room in San Luis Obispo, CA - located in a 100 year old one room schoolhouse - with 2 full sized bocce courts (oyster shell over decomposed granite) next to the tasting room.

Do you know of anyone near here that will do tournaments? I’m thinking that it would be a great event for our wine club members. I could probably put the event on myself, but I’d love to have the experts here to run it! I attached a picture of the courts and one of the tasting room."

{Lori - I've been all over the USA watching and participating in events and I've come to the conclusion that there is no one better than I am at running events, schmoozing with the crowd, keeping a constant flow of banter going, etc. I see so many good-hearted people running events, but they have no charisma, no concept of timing, of keeping everyone engaged...and too often, no sense of humor - heck, it's supposed to be FUN!

Lori, fly me out to sunny California, pay me a vast sum of money and I'll rock the house. Or, more likely, maybe someone in your area will read this email and offer to help.

All right you kind-hearted, yet humorless and un-charismatic bocce lover, contact Lori at and do it up right!}

Sandro Martignetti sends news of his family's popular and successful charity tournament held each October...

"The Sixth Annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, October 10 at the Sportszone in Derry, NH. Recipients of this year's proceeds will be the Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation."

About the Foundation:

The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation was incorporated in the fall of 2002 following the passing if its name sake Michael James Dunleavy, age 8 who succumbed to an inoperable brain tumor which was first diagnosed in the late spring of that year. The Foundation was born out of Michael's own desire to help other children who had cancerous brain tumors or other illnesses. Please visit our 'About me' page to learn more about Michael and watch a video of one conversation that set the wheels in motion. The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation, Inc. has received tax exemption status under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation is listed as a Public Charity and all contributions are tax deductible.

Aldo Pellini writes...

"First, thanks for your 'Joy of Bocce.' I don't see how any book on the subject could be more comprehensive. I am in the process of laying out ('building' would be too extravagant a claim) a maverick court (8'x60') in the backyard--a quicky project for the upcoming get-together on the 4th of July weekend. Removed grass and now working on leveling a woefully uneven section of lawn and putting together the end boards with swingboards.

Later on (after the 4th) will work on the sideboards and possibly add stone dust for the surface. Your book convinced me that a scaled-down version (very scaled-down) was a a do-able job. Thanks.

One question: We have an old set of bocce balls bought in the North End many moons ago. They are dark brown wooden balls with criss-crossing lines on four balls. Would like to paint four of them one color to make them stand out more. Can I use any primer and finish paint to do this? I have an acrylic latex primer and green exterior paint I will use for the end boards. Can I use the same paint on the balls? Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks for getting me interested in the game. I regret now that I did not show any interest when my father, an avid player, was alive."

{The lines on four balls are most likely to differentiate one team's balls from the other team's. You can paint them if you like, but all those antique shows almost always advise leaving the items in their original condition. I'd be worried that the paint might chip. Sorry I can't be of more help on this matter - can any reader chime in? Please REPLY.}
