Hello again my bocce friends,

Sorry I missed my deadline last week. I have a sister who has just been admitted to a nursing home because of an Alzheimer's type dementia. She has no husband, no significant other, no other living relative, so I have been busy trying to settle her affairs. She's a youthful 67 years old, and it breaks my heart to see her in this condition.

I hope to be involved in more cheerful endeavors (like bocce) to keep my spirits up. Thank heavens for bocce!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

I have played in several National Championships, the North American Championships and World Championships; so, I have been around the sport for quite a while and have played a few good balls. Well, that was not the case on Saturday at the East Portale Raffa Tournament. Not having played on natural courts too often lately, I had a difficult time with these courts and it was humbling!

On Sunday, I went back to East Portale Park to volunteer at the V. I. P. event. These letters stand for Very Inspirational People. There were 31 teams made up of 4 individuals with special needs. These were both children and adults with disabilities. Could these folks play on those courts! Again, it was humbling watching them play good ball after good ball. But the coup de gras was when one of these players with impaired vision demonstrated that anyone can play bocce successfully. His coach would stand over the pallino and clap his hands two times and this player would gauge the distance and direction of the pallino. In one frame he made two points for his team that were within one foot of the pallino! That was very humbling!

This was the Sixth Annual V. I. P. event. There were approximately five hundred people in attendance. About 150 players, fifty or so volunteers refereeing, keeping score, match making, cooking burgers, etc. and two hundred to three hundred family members and friends of players.

These players played their hearts out for their teams, demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, and were cheered by their teammates, friends, and family members. They competed at the best of their ability, and you could see joy in their eyes and pride in the eyes of their family members.

Clubs like the East Portale Bocce Club must be complimented for offering their facilities for events like this and all the volunteers and sponsors as well. Last week at the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton, a similar event has held. Thanks go out to those who make these events happen, and I urge everyone to volunteer sometime at an event like this. The rewards are greater than can be explained!

The United States Bocce Federation’s Western Sector Team Raffa Championship will be held on June 12, 2010 at the Italian Athletic Club, 3541 N. Cherryland Avenue, Stockton, CA 95215.

Sandro Martignetti sends news of his family's popular and successful charity tournament held each October...

"The Sixth Annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, October 10 at the Sportszone in Derry, NH. Recipients of this year's proceeds will be the Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation."

About the Foundation:

The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation was incorporated in the fall of 2002 following the passing if its name sake Michael James Dunleavy, age 8 who succumbed to an inoperable brain tumor which was first diagnosed in the late spring of that year. The Foundation was born out of Michael's own desire to help other children who had cancerous brain tumors or other illnesses. Please visit our 'About me' page to learn more about Michael and watch a video of one conversation that set the wheels in motion. The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation, Inc. has received tax exemption status under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation is listed as a Public Charity and all contributions are tax deductible.

Diane Kelley informs us of a correction...

Mario: Please be advised that David Canclini made a mistake when he reported who won the Western Sector last year. It was Paolo Pro, Diane Kelley, Mike Nicosia and Benedetto Nicosia. I'd appreciate it if you would make a correction on our behalf. Thank you!"

Jerry South sends a friendly and informative note...

"I visited Kalamazoo last week and seized the opportunity to spend the day and evening in the eastern part of Michigan with Mike Grasser and his teammates, Dr. Joe and Sal, first at the Palazzo where we scorched the courts. I also saw Tony Battaglia again for the first time since the 2007 national tournament at Livermore. Then for an evening in Windsor, Canada with Americo Razza at the great club Ciociaro for more raffa, una cena grandissima, and a tour of the premises. Many of the club members dropped by and by the end of the evening I became transported to Italy. There is nothing quite like Italian generosity and warmth.

Host Mike lives on the shore of Sylvan Lake, near Pontiac, and looks after several nearby outdoor courts where his Da Vinci Club holds forth. During volo practice one of his longer shots cleared the backboard and landed in the lake. Luckily it was shallow! There you have it....just another day in the life of a very fortunate boccetore."

{Sounds like a pretty good day to me!}

Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition Update

Sifting through and evaluating the many hundreds of photographs for inclusion in the new edition was a daunting task for me. The photos had to convey what we were after, and they also had to be high resolution. Some great shots made the cut and some equally great ones just didn't quite make it.

The text isn't changed much from the 2nd edition. The chapters are shorter and the book is less imposing and, I hope, more attractive to the average person. The big difference is in the photos. Over 100 high resolution shots show off the game the way it should be seen.

Can any reader help with this request?

Bradley Scroggs asks a common question...

"I just received a bocce set. The included rules ... similar to yours and other USA 'open' rules ... are not clear about ending a frame if the 'in' team has balls left. So I start the frame, and my opponent rolls four straight 'out' balls; I have one point, but three remaining balls. May I just take my one point and consider the frame over, or must I roll the remaining three, risking inadvertently knocking my 'in' ball away, and giving my opponent points?"

{You can "take the one and run" as some people say. But three balls are a lot to squander. I'd look at the lay of the land and see if there is any possibility of striking the pallino and moving it to a new position (or knocking the opponents close ball away). That way, you could end up with multiple points. If something bad happens, you'd still have two balls to try and fix things.

Anyway, you don't have to roll the balls or drop them on the ground. Just say, "I'll take the one point" and then walk to the other end.}

Ron Bevan writes...

"I am building a beginner’s court in my yard in NJ. I understand that clay and oyster shells are preferred surfaces but both are out of my price range. I understand that Carmine D'Agostino used stone dust, which seems to have some disadvantages. Any tips on other surfaces that are economical and provide a good surface?"

{That Carmine D'Agostino sure has gotten famous on the bocce court building circuit! Check out his work here: .

Har-Tru (tennis court clay) and oyster shell can be pricey depending on where you are located and how much it costs to ship the product to you. For example, Har-Tru currently ships from Virginia. The cost to ship, say, 8 tons of product to the west coast is more than the cost of the material.

Stone dust is popular because it is inexpensive, but you have to make sure it is fine, no pebbles or large stones mixed in.}

2003 World Championship - Chiasso, Switzerland...

Photos of the week
Recently we celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary at the lovely outdoor courts in the North End of Boston. The family went to dinner at the Legal Seafood at Park Plaza, then made their way over to the three courts on Commercial St. where our crew met them and orchestrated a fun afternoon of bocce.

I told the family about our bocce friend Elie who had outlived a spouse of 50 years. Elie met Rita who had also outlived a spouse of 50 years. The two hit it off beautifully, skiing into their 80's and, besides sports, they had so many things in common.

Elie, not one to mince words, said to Rita one day...

"What the hell! Wanna go for a hundred?"

The married couple resides in Florida while working on their next 50 years of married life.
