The weekly Ezine for bocce aficionados everywhere
Volume 8, Issue #40 - December 7, 2009
Publisher: Mario Pagnoni Copyright 2009
76 Emsley Terrace, Methuen, MA 01844 (vm 800-211-1202 ext 4949)

Hello again my bocce friends,

I had a December 6th birthday on Sunday and turned age 62. It seems like I just got on the planet - I don't know where the six decades went. Anyway, nowadays a sixty-year-old is relatively young. I continue playing senior basketball (I can still shoot the rock, but can't do much else) and softball (still hold my own with the "young pups", you know, the fifty-somethings), and I'm determined to keep playing bocce until I get good at it (I'll need longevity for that!).

One of the links to last week's photos was incorrect. I'm usually more careful, testing all the links before I launch, but I think this might have been at two o'clock Tuesday morning while I was still trying to make Monday's deadline. So if you missed those photos, please click here:

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Reminder: one of last week's newsletter links was incorrect for the 2009 Pallino d'Oro photos. I usually check all the links before launching but was suffering from missed deadline syndrome in the early morning hours and messed up. So, click the photo to the right (that's the Pallino d'Oro trophy) or the link below to view the correct photos for last week's issue...

Mary Lynn Whitlow of Bocce USA in West Frankfort, IL is doing a great job of keeping us informed of her group's bocce efforts. It's also a wonderful and fitting way to honor Bocce Bob Whitlow's memory.

Says Mary Lynn...

"I so enjoy reading your newsletter. I am still trying to keep our Bocce USA league going and we have nine teams and a lot of fun! I guess now that Bob is gone I am beginning to really appreciate the game. I am the Italian but he was the bocce player. Anyway, keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you and yours."

{Right back at ya', Mary Lynn. There's no better way to honor and remember Bob than by keeping his programs running.}

Bart Costa sends news and an invitation...

"We'll be starting our winter tournament January 10th in Carlin Park, Jupiter, Florida. Under the Palm trees, ocean breezes, etc. Come join us is in Florida."

Richard Curreri (Naples, FL) sends more Florida bocce news...

"The Southwest Florida Bocce Conference will begin its third season on January 8, 2010. The season runs for twelve weeks with a conference tournament to be held on March 26, 2010 to determine the conference champion. The 2010 Southwest Florida Bocce Conference consists of twelve communities. They are Bay Forest (Naples), Bonita Bay (Bonita Springs), Breckenridge (Estero), Carlton Lakes (Naples), Cascades (Estero), Copperleaf (Bonita Springs), Highland Woods (Bonita Springs), Jamaica Bay (Ft. Myers), Lighthouse Bay (Bonita Springs), Pelican Landing (Bonita Springs), Village Walk (Bonita Springs) and Worthington County Club (Bonita Springs). Directly after the tournament, a cookout will be held to celebrate the end of the season. A good time is had by all communities and the fun and camaraderie canít be beat.

In 2011, the conference intends to expand to sixteen communities. If anybody that lives in the Southwest Florida area would like to join or would like more information about our conference, please contact Jere Shue (239) 591-4141 E-mail: ."

Benji Tosi sends this...

"Here is a bocce article that came out today in The Bold Italic that you might enjoy. Happy Holidays."

International Rules Video Primer

I'm learning to use my Flip Video and recorded and posted the following on YouTube for those unfamiliar with punta raffa volo...

Here is a three-and-a-half minute video of one frame of international punta raffa volo singles play where there happened to be no hitting, just pointing. Notice how gently the rolls are on the synthetic surface at Michiganís Palazzo di Bocce.

Two good players, Brian Polantz and Angel Cordano, match up in a duel of pointing. Brian Polantz starts off by rolling his first ball a little past the pallino.

Dr. Cordano then rolls next and beats Brianís point. Notice how the referee marks the positions of balls with chalk affixed to the bottom of the measuring device. When the referee holds the scoring device upright (perpendicular to the court surface), heís telling the players that the last roll beat the previous point. Holding it parallel to the court surface means the point was not made and you must roll again.

After Brian Polantz rolls all four of his bocce balls, he moves to the area of the played balls, stands outside the court, and waits for the end of the frame.

When the frame ends Dr. Cordano ends up with two points as he had two balls closer to the pallino than the closest ball of Polantz.

Dr. C gets to roll the pallino in the next frame and play the first ball.

Alvaro Bettucchi sends an interesting Microsoft PowerPoint file...

He says "Sometimes, those of us of Italian descent have to feel proud of Italy. We have a religion that has been handed down to us for 2000 years and kept together in Rome by mostly Italians and those of us that continue to support it, the arts, the music, medicine, science and construction. Italy just shot a bullet to outer space, full of materials for the USA outer space station, and now an Italian is building a...take a look and enjoy."

Joe Quarterone of Massachusetts and Florida sends a YouTube link to "a funny video..."

Elizabeth Wong Fontana says...

"To see photos of the 2009 Peppermill Tournament go to BocceUSAforum and sign-in...

"Please spread the word out to the players who were there in Reno, the first part of the video highlights of the Peppermill tournament is out on . Teams Pro, Incrediballs, Bella Bocce, and Battaglia are featured, with a longer tribute to the Battaglia family. They truly captured the bocce spirit with their 90 year grandfather Rocco, and special grandson Kenny Lane playing along aunt and grandmother to beat bocce champions Bella Bocce of California."

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Joy of Bocce Weekly faithful reader George Danner of Griffin, Georgia. His group has an interesting tournament format...

"Here are the results of the 2009 Bocce Cup. This tournament was held in Griffin at Lance Taylor's grass courts. This was the 7th cup tournament in the series. The tournament is held every 2 years with the Griffin Bocce Team vs. the Peachtree Bocce Team.

We started this tournament in 1997 using the 'Ryder Cup' format.

Twenty-one (21) team points are at stake.

A team point is earned with each match won.

All matches go to 12 points.

The team that earns 11 points is declared the winner and will retain the Chad Smith Cup for 2 years.

The 21 matches are as follows:

6 singles: (matches # 1-4-7-10-13-16)

3 doubles: 4 balls/player (matches # 2-5-8)

3 foursomes: 2 balls/player (matches #3-6-9)

5 doubles: 2 balls/player (matches # 11-14-17-19-20)

4 foursomes: 1 ball/player (matches # 12-15-18-21)

12 rollers per roster max. - 10 is the min.

No player can play more than 1 singles match.

All players must play at least one match.

Names are put in the hat by the captains before each match.

Names are picked out of the hat for the next match so the teams will not know who they will face until the start of the match.

Record of the Bocce Cup (Chad Smith Trophy)

PTC: 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007

Griffin: 2001, 2005, 2009

2011 at PTC - John Landis' grass courts

John came up with the idea of the Bocce Cup and also the format. Chad Smith was a member of the first Cup Tournament rolling for Griffin. He passed away with cancer. He was 27 years old.

Matt Wood captained the Griffin Team and Mike Morrison captained the PTC Team. We had enough food to feed 50 people, some of the best Bar-B-Q in the South cooked by Lance Taylor and Curt Stevens. These two need to open a bar-b-q place, it's that good.

The team of Drew Taylor and Curt Stevens won the tournament over Mo (Mike Morrison) and Craig Drum. This was the 20th match. The 21st match was won by Griffin to tie the tournament up at 10 wins each. This was the first time the tournament went down to the last match. Best Cup Tournament to date."
