GRASS ROOTS BOCCE - Jean Anthony uses volunteer help and donated materials to form the Bocce Buddies of Bath (Maine). The group has successful outdoor and indoor programs at their senior center thanks to the tireless efforts of Ms. Anthony.

The two outdoor courts are a little "rough around the edges", but they are serviceable and... you can't beat the price!

The used railroad ties and the labor were free.

For indoor play, carpets are rolled out and sideboards are set up. The simple design allows the temporary courts to be set up and broken down quickly.

Because some of the seniors have a little trouble getting in and our of the courts, they place their chairs like this...and are careful not to disturb the path of rolled balls.

How's this for low budget sideboard construction? Altered clip boards do the trick.

Home-made scoreboard goes to 16 points.

The old "string in the can trick" completes the low budget but effective ambiance.

Jean Anthony (right) gets some well deserved recognition for her efforts.
